Key Responsibilities of an Insulation Preparator:
- Surface Preparation:
- Clean and prepare bulkheads, pipes, ducts, and other surfaces before insulation is applied.
- Remove rust, grease, or old insulation residues.
- Apply primers or adhesives if needed.
- Material Handling:
- Measure and cut insulation materials (e.g., mineral wool, foam, fiberglass) according to blueprints or instructions.
- Prepare fastening systems like pins, mesh, or lacing wire.
- Coordination with Insulators:
- Work closely with insulation installers to ensure surfaces are ready and materials are correctly prepared.
- Ensure materials are staged and organized for efficient installation.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Follow safety standards, especially in confined spaces and hazardous environments.
- Ensure fire-resistant and soundproofing materials meet marine regulations (e.g., SOLAS – Safety of Life at Sea).
Skills and Tools:
- Ability to read marine insulation drawings or isometric diagrams
- Use of hand tools (cutters, wire tools, fastening tools)
- Basic knowledge of insulation types and applications in shipbuilding
