Key Responsibilities:
- Surveillance: Constantly monitor swimmers for signs of distress, danger, or unsafe behavior.
- Rescue Operations: Be ready to jump into action if someone is in trouble, using techniques like reaching, throwing, or swimming to save them.
- First Aid/CPR: Administer first aid, CPR, or other emergency care when necessary.
- Enforcing Rules: Ensure that swimmers are following safety rules (like no running on pool decks or no diving in shallow areas).
- Maintaining Equipment: Regularly check rescue equipment (buoys, first aid kits, etc.) and ensure it’s in good working order.
- Preventative Actions: Provide safety information to swimmers, watch for dangerous behavior, and prevent accidents before they happen.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Swimming Proficiency: Lifeguards must be strong swimmers, usually capable of swimming a certain distance quickly.
- CPR and First Aid Certification: Lifeguards must be certified in CPR, first aid, and sometimes specialized water rescue techniques.
- Physical Fitness: The job requires good stamina and fitness, as you need to be ready to act quickly and sometimes exert yourself physically.
- Focus and Attention to Detail: Lifeguards need to stay alert and focused for long periods of time.
- Communication Skills: Communicating effectively with both the public and other team members is important for enforcing rules and responding to emergencies.
