Job Summary:
The School Psychologist in a special needs setting provides specialized psychological services to students with disabilities, including developmental, emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges. This role focuses on fostering academic, social, and emotional growth through individualized assessments, interventions, and collaboration with educators, families, and external professionals. The ideal candidate will have expertise in special education law, inclusive practices, and evidence-based strategies for students with diverse needs (e.g., autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, sensory processing disorders).
- Assessment & Evaluation:
- Conduct comprehensive psychological evaluations to identify disabilities, learning barriers, and eligibility for special education services (e.g., IEP/504 Plan development).
- Administer and interpret cognitive, behavioral, and adaptive functioning assessments.
- Screen for co-occurring issues such as anxiety, trauma, or executive functioning challenges.
- Intervention & Support:
- Design and implement individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and social-emotional learning (SEL) programs.
- Provide direct counseling using trauma-informed, play-based, or ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) techniques, as appropriate.
- Train staff on de-escalation strategies, positive behavior supports, and adaptive teaching methods.
- Collaboration & Advocacy:
- Partner with teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and parents to create holistic support plans.
- Advocate for students’ needs during IEP meetings, ensuring compliance with IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and ADA.
- Liaise with external agencies (e.g., pediatricians, mental health providers) to coordinate care.
- Crisis Management:
- Respond to emotional or behavioral crises (e.g., self-harm, aggression) with trauma-sensitive approaches.
- Develop school-wide protocols for mental health emergencies.
- Data & Compliance:
- Maintain accurate records of assessments, interventions, and progress monitoring.
- Ensure compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and state special education regulations.
