Job Summary
A Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) is a healthcare professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating individuals with communication and swallowing disorders. Their job involves assessing speech, language, and communication difficulties in patients of all ages, and developing personalized treatment plans to help improve their abilities. They work with a wide range of conditions, such as stammering, articulation disorders, voice disorders, language delays, aphasia, and more. SLTs may also work with people who have difficulties swallowing, known as dysphagia. Their aim is to enhance communication skills and facilitate effective communication for their patients, ultimately improving their quality of life and independence. Additionally, SLTs often collaborate with other healthcare professionals, educators, and families to provide comprehensive care and support for their clients.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Assessment: Conducting thorough evaluations to assess the speech, language, and communication abilities of patients, identifying any disorders or difficulties.
- Diagnosis: Accurately diagnosing communication disorders and determining the root causes of speech and language difficulties.
- Treatment Planning: Developing individualized treatment plans based on assessment results and tailoring interventions to meet each patient's specific needs and goals.
- Therapy Sessions: Providing one-on-one or group therapy sessions to help patients improve their speech, language, and communication skills. This may involve various techniques, exercises, and strategies.
- Progress Monitoring: Regularly tracking and evaluating patients' progress to make necessary adjustments to treatment plans and ensure ongoing improvement.
- Collaborative Approach: Working closely with other healthcare professionals, educators, and caregivers to provide comprehensive care and promote effective communication in various settings.
- Counselling and Support: Offering guidance and emotional support to patients and their families, helping them understand the condition and cope with the challenges associated with communication disorders.

- Educational Support: Assisting teachers and educational staff in developing strategies to support students with communication difficulties in the classroom.
- Research and Continuing Education: Staying up to date with advancements in the field of speech and language therapy and participating in ongoing professional development to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
- Documentation: Maintaining accurate and detailed records of assessments, treatment plans, progress reports, and other relevant information.
- Advocating for patients' rights and promoting their inclusion in society by creating accessible environments and opportunities.
- Adhering to ethical standards and maintaining patient confidentiality throughout the treatment process.
Non-Clinical Responsibilities
- Participate in team meetings to discuss patient cases, share knowledge, and contribute to care planning.
- Provide timely and accurate documentation and communication in line with HAAD/DOH and insurance company standards.
- Provide reports for health insurers, letters for GPs and referral sources to maintain a relationship to generate a referral stream.
- Commitment to discovery calls answering patient queries and concerns longing on Odoo.
- Ensuring adequate communication with admin staff and managers.
- A commitment to social media and marketing strategies in line with promoting Perfect Balance clinic and brand.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders.
- Licensure or certification as required by the state or country of practice.
- Knowledge of various speech and language disorders and their causes.
- Ability to assess and diagnose communication disorders in individuals of all ages.
- Familiarity with various assessment tools and techniques used in speech-language therapy.
- Expertise in developing personalized treatment plans and therapy goals for patients.
- Skill in providing individual and group therapy sessions.
- Understanding of assistive communication devices and technologies.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, educators, and caregivers.
- Continuous professional development to stay updated on the latest research and best practices in the field.
- Empathy and effective communication skills to interact with patients and their families.
- Adherence to ethical standards and confidentiality principles in therapy practice.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with clients, families, and healthcare teams.
