The post holder will always work within the scope of practice, putting the health, wellbeing and safety of their patient first as they assess, plan, implement and evaluate their needs.
Assistant Nurse will:
• Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, contribute to the overall planning and delivery of nursing care for patients ensuring a patient cantered approach to care.
• Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, assist in the activities of daily living for patients in accordance with the patient care plan e.g. distribution of patient meals and assisting patients with hygiene needs.
• Maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients, working within evidence-based guidelines and unit specific competencies.
• Demonstrate service excellence and act as a patient advocate to support the patients’ dignity and rights at all times.
• Ensure the Registered Nurse is informed of vital sign observations and care provided for patients and document appropriately.
• Observe and report changes in the patient’s condition and reactions to different aspects of care to a Registered Nurse immediately.
• Respond to emergencies according to the organization’s policies and procedures
• Facilitate post discharge clinic visits and/or tests as required including scheduling follow-up and referral appointments
• Help arrange patient transportation as required.
• Maintain flow of documents for scanning if needed.
• Provide direct patient care according to the therapeutic plan and individual patient needs as directed by the patient care plan under supervision of a Registered Nurse.
• Provide appropriate information to assist the Registered Nurse in the preparation and maintenance of an effective patient care plan.
• Record in the patient’s official record a detailed report of care given which reflects the therapeutic plan and specific aspects of the patient care plan under direction of Registered Nurse.
• Reinforce instructions given to the patient by the physician and Registered Nurse and refers new needs for instruction to the Registered Nurse.
• Initiate emergency assistance as per policies and procedures and perform Basic Life Support as per regulatory requirements and scope.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Registered Nurse and within the scope of practice
• Ask questions when in doubt for clarification by the Registered Nurse
• Escalate to and seek expert advice from colleagues when unable to or not competent to undertake required care.
• Competent with all the mandatory and unit specific competencies supported and assigned on Elsevier platform to ensure adherence to evidence Based practices.
• Demonstrate proficiency in emergency procedures, equipment, and protocols relevant to the department.
• Participate in ongoing programs and certification to support professional growth and maintain clinical competency.
• Comply with unit Scope of service.
Unit Specific
• Demonstrate on understanding & Utilization of evidence-based health care.
• Performs nursing care for patient who visit Outpatient department in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of health care errors.
• Must have excellent observation skills, able to think critically and to make quick and effective decisions.
• Able to function efficiently in patients care within the assigned clinic and relieve other nursing units in the hospital if necessary.
• Complete safety of patients in the assigned clinic.
• Organization of assigned duties.
• Accurately monitor & record patient’s condition.
• Ensures investigation reports are available for consultation if applicable.
• Perform assessment and reassessments on patient as per assessment policy according to the clinic assigned.
• Perform patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age.
• Reporting any abnormality in a patient’s condition immediately to the medical staff.
• Preparation of patient for Emergency surgeries.
• Competent of nursing care.
• Document on patient record as per current standards and policies.
• Assist physician with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
• Perform routine nursing procedures / Skills as per the clinic assigned.
• Able to perform ECG.
• Ensuring all equipment is maintained in good working order, reporting any fault to Nurse Manager/Engineering.
• Have an appropriate license to work as an assistant nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all the qualification and experience these mandates.
• Manage their own professional re-licensure.
• Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.
• Be willing to work across departments and On Call when necessary
• Be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English (spoken and written)
