The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Tool Maker to join our advanced manufacturing division. This hands-on role is integral to the fabrication, testing, maintenance, and repair of precision tools and composite components used in our UAV and aerospace platforms. The Tool Maker will work within a team of technicians and engineers, ensuring projects meet stringent quality, safety, and technical standards. The position requires deep expertise in composite materials, tool fabrication, machine operation, and continuous process improvement within a high-performance manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Fabrication: Build tools, jigs, and fixtures according to engineering specifications and blueprints.
- Machine Operation: Operate and set up CNC 3-axis machines, lathes, and milling equipment to fabricate high-precision tools.
- Quality Assurance: Conduct inspections and testing to ensure composite tools meet specifications and regulatory standards.
- Maintenance: Perform regular tool and equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to ensure operational readiness.
- Documentation: Maintain detailed records of fabrication processes, inspections, and compliance documentation.
- Safety Compliance: Follow strict safety protocols and regulatory procedures; use PPE as required.
- Continuous Improvement: Partner with engineering and operations to identify and implement process improvements, cost efficiencies, and quality enhancements.
- Training: Mentor and support junior technicians and newcomers in composite manufacturing best practices.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational certification in composite technology or toolmaking preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in composite fabrication, testing, and repair.
- Proven ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and engineering documents.
- Certification in LEAN, 5S, or 3P methodologies is advantageous.
- Strong understanding of safety protocols in a manufacturing setting.
- Physical capability to operate machinery and handle composite materials in a production environment.
Technical Tools
- CNC 3-axis milling machines
- Manual lathes and precision machining tools
- Composite layup equipment (vacuum bagging, trimming, sanding)
- Autoclave and out-of-autoclave (oven) systems
- Hand/power tools for precision finishing
- Inspection and QA tools (calipers, gauges, micrometers)
- Documentation software and basic ERP familiarity preferred (e.g., SAP)
